생물종 파괴의 현장:

지난 1970년 이후 95년까지 25년간 지구 자연생물계의 30% 이상이 인간활동으로 파괴됐다고 환경보호단체들이 2일 밝혔다.

세계자연기금(WWF: World Wildlife Fund)은 이같은 자연 파괴는 6천5백만년 전에 공룡이 지구상에서 멸망한 이래 최대 규모라고 지적했다.

WWF가 환경 보존 상태를 파악하기위해 각종 자연환경의 서식생물 수를 중심으로 작성한 "리빙 플래닛"(살아있는 지구) 지수는 지난 70년을 100으로 했을 때 95년에 68로 떨어졌으며 이후로도 계속 낮아지고있다.

숲과 바다, 내륙 담수 등 대표적 생태계 중 인간의 해를 가장 많이 입은 것은 강과 호수, 늪지 등 내륙 담수 환경으로 무려 50으로 떨어져 불과 20여년만에 내륙담수 생태계 생물의 절반이 감소했다.

또 해양생태계 지수는 30이 낮아져 바다 생물이 30%나 감소했음을 드러냈다.

이들 지수는 약 3백50종에 달하는 포유류와 새, 파충류, 어류 등의 총 개체수를 측정해 작성됐으며 상하 10-15%정도의 오차 범위를 갖고있다.

한편 삼림 면적으로 측정한 삼림 생태계 지수는 10% 줄었으며 삼림에 서식하는 생물의 수는 이보다 더 큰 폭으로 감소했을 것으로도 추정됐 다.

삼림 생태계 지수는 열대 삼림의 감소를 반영치 않은 것으로 선진국 온대 지방의 삼림 지대가 이 기간중 대체로 잘 보존된 점을 감안할 경우 열대 삼림 생태계의 파괴는 이보다 크게 심각한 것으로 파악됐다.

관계 전문가는 열대 삼림의 45% 이상이 이 기간중 파괴 된 것으로 분석하고 있다고 영국 일간 인디펜던트지는 전했다.

반면 생태계 훼손과 생물 감소의 원인이 되고있는 관련 자원 소비 지수는 환경피해이상으로 늘어 70년 100에서 95년에는 163으로 높아졌다.

환경 파괴 압력을 보여주는 소비 지수는 곡물과 어류 및 나무 소 비량, 시멘트사용량,담수 소비량,공장 매연및 자동차 배기 가스의 이산 화탄소 배출량 등을 토대로 작성됐다.

Is there a need for a policy on the conservation of plant pathogens?

David Ingram (Congress President) poses the following questions:

If a conservation policy is developed, how could it operate and what
should its limits be?

What can be learned from the conservation policies of other societies,
such as the British Mycological Society?

Are ex situ collections enough, or should the policy embrace in situ
conservation?

Would pathogens conserved in natural ecosystems be seen as a threat to
crop production?

In the conservation of natural ecosystems, should efforts be focused
on those in which important crop relatives continue to co-evolve with
important pathogens?

Or should a wider view of conservation be taken?

What might be the costs and the benefits of national and international
conservation policies for plant pathogens?

How many pathogen species and how much biodiversity is it necessary to
conserve?

And what do we mean by "biodiversity" of pathogens?
